The type of FSSAI license a restaurant will get depends on its scale of operations. Based on the business, there are three categories of FSSAI registration:
1. For small businesses, with a turnover of less than 12 lakh rupees, a Basic FSSAI Registration is done. The turnover is considered annually.
2. When the turnover is over 12 lakh rupees but under 20 crore rupees, yearly, then the business requires an FSSAI State License.
3. For any food business with a turnover above 20 crore rupees in a year, an FSSAI Central License is needed. This license is also applicable to companies that import or export food items.
The process to get an FSSAI license has been exceedingly simplified by the authorities. On the Food Licensing and Registration System, one can fill and submit an application online. The portal allows you to check for which license is your restaurant eligible before filling the application. Moreover, the system sends an alert via email or SMS when the license requires renewal. The article does an excellent job of explaining the three types of licenses. I’d like to add that the steps to filing the application are equally simple. Just go to http://foodlicensing.fssai.gov.in, check your eligibility, create an account, fill the form, and then submit!
